Bio

Fot. Krzysztof Marchlak

My artistic practice takes place on two levels – representational and abstract. Both paths are united by a source of inspiration – multiculturalism and a sense of belonging to a collective imagination. In museums, for as long as I can remember, I have been accompanied by the impression of the incompatibility of the objects viewed with the places in which they are located. The presence of ancient sculptures, African objects or masks in the middle of European capitals makes me uncomfortable. I can’t pass by them indifferently because I am touched by the beauty of their forms. I borrow them for figurative paintings, because these objects have filled my imagination since childhood and have become part of it as a result, although their physical presence should return to where they came from. Abstract paintings and sculptures arise from the need to experience color, the need for simplicity and synthesis, playing with space and its perception.

I was born in Krakow and grew up in Düsseldorf. I graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow in 2001, studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was a lecturer at the University of the Arts, London College of Communication in London.

Since 2023, I have been running a painting studio at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow.

In 2014, my paintings were included in the publication “100 Painters of Tomorrow” by Thames & Hudson publishing house. My works are in the collection of the National Museum in Krakow, the Royal Castle of Wawel, the Museum of Photography in Krakow, the National Museum in Gdansk, and in many private collections.

Since 2015, together with Michal Bratko, I have been leading the artist-run space W I D N A.
